This. Two of my clients and I call the 70-200 2.8 IS II "The Magic Lens", it is that good.
Well that's a little scary. . .I was going to try to buy that lens used. . .
Some of the purists may find this blasphemous, but the variations between a "good" copy and a "poor" copy are minimal. That is to say, even with a "poor" copy you are going to be thrilled with the images. The differences between a "good" and "poor" copy are usually technical minutiae.
There are always risks when purchasing pre-owned kit. No warranty being one. But as far as getting a "good" copy vs a "poor" copy you are rolling the dice just as much purchasing new as you are purchasing new, are you not? There is even an argument to be made that purchasing pre-owned from someone whose word you trust increases your odds of obtaining a "good" copy.
To be honest I don't know that I would be able to distinguish a "good" copy from a "poor" copy of the 70-200mm. I doubt most would be able to. And I know numerous individuals who purchased the lens but not one of them, to my knowledge, has decided they received a "poor" copy of the lens. All are quite satisfied with their 70-200's.
