ok so i recently purchased my first DSLR. The Canon 5D.

Its a 12.8MP Full Frame Cmos Camera. MSPR around 2200$ Body only.

I bought the 24-105mm F4L lens. The lens is the "stock" lens. Though by no means does it under perform. Its sharp and seems to maintain the F4 apeture through out its zoom range. The lens came in at 1149$

The beauty of the 5D is that it a Full frame sensor, with a 24mm X 36mm chip. What this means is that the Field of view of a 24mm lens looks like that of a 24mm lens. No cropping, and no conversion scales to worry about. This mean that wide angle lenses perform to their peak, and this also gives the beneft of having larger pixels on the sensor, increasing its performance in terms of Dynamic range, light sensitivity, and grain signature. Just like a 2/3" sensor on video out performs a 1/3" sensor when they have the same resolution. However, in Digita photography, the ISO ratings are "constant". ISO 100 is ISO 100 across the board, or well.... its suposed to be. What this means really is that the camera can shoot with higher ISO's and maintain a cleaner less grain image. @ 50 ISO, the 5d Takes SPOTLESS images. Absolutly spotless..... however at 3200 ISO, which in combination with a 1/15th of a second shutter is practically night vision. With a faster lens, this effect is even more exaggerated. Even at F4, and approximatly 85mm on the Zoom, i took this picture under the illumination of Xmas lights ada cell phone screen.... Thats it.... The grain performance is quite excellent and QUITE acceptable to me, given the light level. This is directly out of the camera. No post processing except for a reduction in size.

The autofocus is remarkable. i have always been a manual focus guy. I prefer the feel of pulling my own focus. However the 5D's autofocus system which uses 9 points of reference is scary accurate. it almost knows exact where you want to focus, even in the dimmest of scenes.

in combination with an excellent image stabilizer you can shoot handheld with slower shutters speeds that were nearly impossible before. 1/30th and 1/15th of a second become useable shutterpeeds under quick snap shot circumstances. Of course it wont compensate for subject movement, but if you have a steady hand, its like being on a tripod. Its amazing.

The image qualty is astounding. The subtleties of tones, color and shading are incredible. The 5D has what i can only describe as the "Mojo"..... Yes DVX mojo... it just takes beautiful images, soft, yet still sharp, with accurate and vibrant colors.

FLAWS:

Canon's controls are a bit awkward. things that should be acessable on the camera body are not.... like being able to dial in the whitebalance presets. Ugh...

the 24mm lens has a vingette when apeture is wide open. That Pisses me off.....

other than these two forgive able flaws, im in Love.....

Heres a few shots from new years eve, all natural light....

I think your review of the 5D is spot on. Some functions are ackward to access, such as reviewing of pictures, but the large sensor handles noise very well even though it's not the newest camera. The lens is an L series lens, enough said in terms of sharpness.
I am going to send you a PM

I have been using 5D as my main DSLR body for about 2 years now. Here is one example, taken with 24-105 f4 at full open, half sec exposure handheld, fill in light provided by a LED headlamp. I held the camera in front of me and turned my head slowly painting with light. 1200 ISO. The stabilizer in this lens is great. 5D and this 24-105mm zoom make a perfect travel combo for me, it is the only lens I need; no lens change, no dust problems.

For portraits I use the 50mm f1.4, nice DOF effects, more closeup impact than the 85mm f1.8.

My 20mm lens also vingettes but not a problem

Ya know, I feel so darn stupid....I didn't know until I read this that the 5D could go to 50 ISO and I've only shot a little over 11,000 photos with my 5D.....

One day I'll learn to read ALL of the manual.... DUH ME !!!
