Canon 5D MKIII Spotted In The Wild?

I think the 5D(Canon) highlight rolloff looks great myself.

No digital, not even the most expensive camera you can buy, holds a candle to film. It's the one area where film still totally smokes digital. Digital has surpassed film on the lowlight side, but in the highlights it goes from exposed OK to blown out ugliness in one fell swoop.

Well like most things, it's all a matter of opinion. I love how my 7D blows out. In this segment where I shot a dog tag in front of the sun looks great to me (happens at 55s and again a few seconds later):

Canon doesn't need to change a thing for me in that department. Naturally, more dynamic range will give more room to roll off which I think would increase the knee at the top, which I agree could be longer, but how they roll-off I can live with in terms of how it's handled when a channel clips. It is superior to how my FS100 or AF100 handled the same situations and something that, while I can fix it in post, it's not as easy as I'd like.

I'm just trying not to get my hopes up for the 5D or 7D refresh. I have a feeling the reason Canon is making a Cinema division in the first place is to let the still cameras still be still cameras so they can tailor the cameras for specific purposes. Again, opinion, but after seeing the image of their second camera in the cinema line, it seems like that will be their focus. That in itself should really be an indicate that the next 5D might not have what you are looking for, since the other camera would fit the bill of the camera everyone wants.

I think they should have names the other camera 5DC or 5C just to keep that relationship to the 5D line myself. But then again, I have NO idea what 1, 7, 5, 60 have to do with the actual camera :)

All they REALLY need to do is upgrade the processing power. The sensor, the form factor, all perfectly fine IMO. Slap dual Digic 5 processors in there and I think most of our problems would be solved.

I do think the sensor needs an update. With faster processing, it might not be possible to get the pixel data out of the sensor fast enough to the frame rates we want. It might not just be the processors limiting that.

You could be right. The hope would be that they could do it without reducing the size of the sensor, just creating an updated sensor of the same size perhaps. I mean that's the reason I bought the camera, the massive vistavision sensor.

On a side note, MK2 are still selling. My DP got his delivered yesterday. After shooting one film and the teaser for my web series on one, he was sold.

That was sick Rick! I enjoyed watching it!

Thanks! I had a lot of fun doing it. We're working on our next series now, but this one is on the FS100. I miss the highlight performance, but the codec is SO MUCH BETTER.
