moving over from V1 to Canon 5d, just wondering what anyone has experienced using Vegas with the 5d, apprecriate ant suggestions

thats what I'm getting, I have used Cineform for years, I need adeal from them now to switch from Neo HDV. we'll see

NeoHDV will NOT be enough. You need either NeoSCENE or NeoHD, or above. The NeoHDV only goes up to 1440x1080 you see. So make sure you are buying the right product from them.

I highly disagree with Philip Bloom's suggestions. 35mbps mpeg2 it simply has a MASSIVE quality loss over the original 40 mbps h.264 MOV files. I am very disappointed in him, because people take his word for scripture. If he had picked in that dialog ProRES I wouldn't be barking here, but selecting 35mbps XDCAM is just wrong.

C'mon! Relax Eugenia. You keep on barking. You can get your point across without barking.

If you actually listen/ read my info properly I never said XDCAM EX is the best thing to go for. It's a trade off between size and quality as I said to you in email exchanges to you.

It's not wrong. It works for a lot of projects for a lot of people and is the perfect trade off. But for projects that need optimum quality then pro res is the way to go.

I know a large number of people using this workflow before I even started using it and swear by it as the perfect trade off. It's far from perfect but it works. You just need to work out what is best for you.

Thanks.

You can, its not very frame accurate. and QT format is a "finishing format" that's why you re-encode to QT, AVI etc.

What will be the likely workflow for the 7D?

There won't be the need to convert the framerate, but H.264 is not a good editing and CC'ing codec. So what might be a wise codec to convert to with Vegas, for Vegas?

I'm sure the universal fixall, Cineform, will be one solution. But what *Other* options are there?

Oh... that sounds cool Barry. But wouldn't h.264 be a bad codec to color correct with? Or would you get the same quality output so long as you didn't render to H.264 a second time before the final render out?

Also, it seems like using that function would kill your speed when using Magic Bullet on the GPU. Is that the case?

But wouldn't h.264 be a bad codec to color correct with?

No. The damage is already done when you recorded with h.264. Converting it to some other 4:4:4 or 4:2:2 format will only interpret from the 4:2:0 original source. You can't "magically" get more information than what you started with. But one potential benefit to converting to another format may be speed of editing

Or would you get the same quality output so long as you didn't render to H.264 a second time before the final render out?

If you keep everything lossless, then that's the best you can do. Each time you re-encode with a lossy format, you will incur generation loss
