Canon 550D Videos @ 60p (for slow motion) using Premiere CS4

I'm not sure if this was asked before.. but I'm having problems using the "interpret footage" to 24p. My timeline setting is set to HDV 24fps. Whenever i set a speed of a clip on the timeline, the "IN" and "OUT" would change.

I'm an FCP editor... I'm looking for the equivalent of Cinema Tools for PC that i can use to convert 60p to 24p. Because maybe, at native 24p setting... It would solve my problem.

Also, where can i find codecs for H.264 to edit in Premiere realtime.

PP has the codec required to edit H.264. Don't go trying to fix that by installing other codecs. If your system can't edit those files in real time, you simply need a faster system.

To use a 60p clip as slow motion, you need to right click on the bin, click "Interpret Footage...", select the radio button next to "Assume this frame rate:" and enter the timeline's frame rate into the box. I guess you should use 23.97? I'm not sure what it does with the clip's in and out points after you change it, you should just set them after you've modified the interpretation.

yup... that's what I do.. but the clip is always slipping. I ended up duplicating the clips so I could have both 60p's and 24p's. But my editing style requires ramping effects (fast mo and slow mo of a clip). Is there a 3rd party software similar to Cinema tools of FCP?

You should be able to right click on the clip and set the speed percentage (40% for 60fps to 24fps)...alternately you can go to effects and use the time remapping tool which will let you do speed ramps.

Edit: And just so you know, keyframes get screwed up when you do time ramps, so if you need to set any kind of keyframes like scaling or translating the frame, then you'll need to nest the time remapped clip as its own sequence and then set the keyframes on the sequence inside your main sequence.

Thanks.... correct me if I'm wrong. In FCP, a 60p clip on a 24p timeline will be read as 24p (it would drop the rest of the frames). When the speed is set to less than 100% (let say 40%)... it would create fields. And that's different from a stretched clip (native 24p from 60) to a slowed down clip.

I'm not sure if it's different in Premiere Pro.

Sorry... It's been a looong time I've used PP.

Fields? Do you mean like interlacing lines?

I'm using CS4... does it also have the H.264 codec?
