Canon 430ex

Until I can get the flash off camera, I think the feature I find most useful is the infrared beam that helps auto-focus in low light. Is there a way to get this beam without the flash firing. I know I can focus and then turn off the flash entirely but that seems pretty annoying to do for each shot.

Also what can I use to get the flash off camera (remotely) aside from a pocket wizard.

Just an update in case anyone was interested:

I contacted Canon and they said that you can use the flash just for the infrared focusing but you need a to be shooting on a Canon 40d or newer/better. It's a shame because I only have a rebel XT and the infrared focusing is so accurate and fast.

I dont know about the infrared focusing, but you can use a ste2 wireless transmitter. It works splendidly with both the 430 EX and the 580 EX (which, by the way, the 580EX has a wireless transmitter inside- so you could use it for on camera and fire the 430EX off camera)

There are lots of other wireless triggers, that you can work up, check out the Strobist (http://strobist.blogspot.com) They have lots more info on how to get ahold of wireless transmitters on the cheap.

You can trigger as many slaves as you want with the ste2. Pretty sweet deal, actually.
