Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L II

this makes no sense whatsoever. IS on the 2 primes but not on the classic zoom? massive price bump as well. I'll stick w/my Tamron, thanks.

Yeah, I was absolutely shocked at the price. I hope it hits the street under $2K.

As for IS on a 24-70, not necessary for me.

I love my 24-70 2.8L but was hoping for a revised model w/IS oh well. It better have some significant IQ improvements for the price jump.

BUT we now have a 24mm prime w/IS at 2.8... hmmm I'll stick with the 24mm 1.4.

I don't get why the 18-55 2.8 EF-s lens has IS but the full-frame equivalent 24-70 doesn't. I know the 24-70 is optically a better lens but come on...

Yes, It seems Canon did drop the ball on this one. The new version is supposed to be stellar from an optical point of view though. But without the IS the upgrade price is a lot steeper. Seems like they would get the message that people want IS on every lens that is made now. I know I do. It is not like the price was holding them back, they pretty much doubled it.

I don't like IS on my lenses. They add lots of weight. I shoot stills mostly from a tripod. I carry the lightest versions of L glass because most of the time I'm lugging them around in my backpack.

I see you're point about the weight, well then Canon should make an IS version and NON-IS version as they do with the many versions of the 70-200 and now the 24mm prime. Sacrificing a 1.4 F-stop for IS 2.8 on a wide 24mm lens doesn't make much sense to me. What does make sense and what ALOT of people want is an IS version of the workhorse 24-70mm...

To me it is just straight up bizarre Canon releases a 24mm 2.8 IS prime but no 24-70 IS lens (at least a separate version with IS ala the 70-200)

I'm curious to see the image quality difference with the new 24-70 lens with video. I hear mixed views if you see a difference at 1080p video with the new 70-200 Vs the old one, I've used both and I do think the new one makes a slight difference, what is an upgrade incentive on that lens is the silent IS, the old one sounds like a MAC truck driving down a gravel road.

Unless Canon announces an IS version I think they really mucked up this release as I just don't see many people (at least video guys) upgrading for this price. Would've been a day 1 buy for me with IS.

I bet it flies off the shelf. Yes, probably mostly photographers but not just photogs.

Yes I agree, I think it will sell truckloads, I'm just saying I can't see video guys that already own the original 24-70mm running out and upgrading unless there is significant image quality gains that can be seen in video.
I think this will be a fantastic lens but I see the majority of buyers being photographers (whereas in stills you can most probably see the sharpness increase in detail, etc.) and video peeps who don't own the 24-70 and that be looking
to upgrade to full-frame and looking for a good workhorse lens to match.

I think Canon would make even more of a killin' if they released this version (great optics, non IS so lighter) and an IS version for those who wanted that feature, same strategy as the 70-200mm.

I know I keep going on and on about this but I was really hoping for an IS version lol. Oh well maybe in another 10yrs for the next revision or maybe they don't want to cannibalize the 24-105 IS.

I'd bet the farm this is the kit lens for the 5D "X" Mark 3.

Yeah, it's $2k by itself, but wait, oh my gosh, what a deal, only $800 something when you buy it with the new 5D "x" and/or "mark 3."

No IS either relates to video, or, probably -- the good news that you can invest in other Canon lenses that feature IS.

+1. Maybe they will. And if that's Canon's intention, releasing in this order would make sense to me. If they can sell the II's for $2300, they won't have any problem selling the II IS's for more.

FWIW, Tamron announced that they will be releasing a 24-70 f/2.8 WITH VC. I'm guessing it will come in around $1100.
