Cannot Select Output Mode

I am trying to preview to external monitor using AE 6.5, but when I select IEEE 1394 for the output device, I cannot select an output mode (I just get an empty white vertical space). I suspect my IEEE 1394 is not Adobe compatible. Can anyone suggest a card that does work properly with AE 6.5 and allows preview to external NTSC monitor?? Thanks much.

I believe the output works for RAM previews only. So, if you are only pressing play to go through your timeline, you wont see anything. Try doing a RAM preview and see if that works.
 
Thanks Rapier. When I first notice this problem I got on the horn with Adobe, and they confirmed there was a problem, but could not solve it. They suggested I change my firewire card. My card is an Adaptek one, so I am wondering if anyone out there has AE 6.5 and if their external monitor works OK, maybe they could let me know what kind of firewire card they are using?
