candid event shots

hey guys,

i was asked by a co-worker of mine to shoot her son's birthday celebration, it's going to be outside, with a small crowd, and it'll last for a couple of hours (1:00 and on). i was wondering about a portable flash setup, and I've gotten some good results with on-camera bounce flash. i was wondering what you all use when attending a casual event but you want to put together something nice for the young mom to remember (the kid is about 4).

the gear i have to bring:
-2x sb600
-1x sb800
--diffusion domes/grids/snoots/presslite vertex
-50mm f/1.8
-18-200mm f/3.5-5.6
-70-300mm f/3.5-5.6

there's more, but i dont think it'll add to the pictures at an event. i was thinking about bringing the 18-200mm and the 50mm with the sb800 on remote or the sc-15 sync shord.

any suggestions would be nice, thanks in advance guys.

If you will be walking around the whole time, then just shoot with bare flash on camera. It will help cut down on some of the harsh midday light. If you use any diffusion then you'll lose too much light for it to matter. When I shoot events in midday then that is the setup I use. Only exception being if you are shooting any staged group or formal type shots, get the flash off camera for those.

Also, I would only take the 50 if you want to get some good DOF shots....but you will not be able to use flash with that lens. Even with high speed sync the speedlight would not put out enough light b/c of how fast the shutter would be moving in the daylight.

I'll side with Dan here, I've been doing this a lot lately and when all is said and done you never end up using anything but one wide angle zoom and an on board speedlight. Go with your 18-200 and on board sb800 (with stofen omni-bounce for diffusion).

You'll catch all the finer candid moments this way and double your shots instead of trying to set-up all the time, ESPECIALLY when it's a kids party, it's like shooting flies on crack. Good luck!
