Can you use sports footage in music videos?

Hey,

I didn't know where to ask this but...can one use stock, bought, footage of sporting events in music videos, or is it not allowed b/c it contains the image of the competitor and all the team's trademarks etc?

I.E. If NFL or NBA team A played B, and there was stock footage available for it, can I buy that footage and cut it to music and sell that video to a band, and can they then use it as they would any other music video - tv, royalties, promo etc?

If no, is there a period from when older footage becomes usable - i.e. the copyright is expired or whatever?

The rights should be spelled out with the stock footage agency as to what you can do with the images/soound. But as you have probably heard at the end of every sports broadcast, rights and permissions are reserved and need to be cleared via (NFL, MBL, etc.).
