Can you upgrade CPU's in MacPros?

Pavel+ I agree with almost everything you said. Adding processors is different from upgrading. And most mfgs. don't allow adding processors. Some motherboard manufacturers do as I understand, so if you are building your own box, you could probably build that in. However, HP, for example, specifically calls this out in their latest box. Not that I bought it, I was just curious.

From the FAQ sheet on the Z800 Workstation:
Q . How do I add the second processor? Is a system board swap required?
A . CPU upgrades are field and customer installable without system board swaps using the HP
Z Workstations Workstation CPU upgrade kit. The second processor must be the same
speed and stepping as the first.

So some mfg. do allow this in a workstation class machine. Which I consider the Mac Pro to be.

All I have to say is that I brought my MacBook Pro almost 3 years ago and it still kicks but. I own a 20" monitor for editing and I have to say that is does the job in a major way. I could only imagine what I would be able to do with a fully load blown out tower. But forget that. You can run 8-16 gb of ram on an IMAC now. I could never go back to PCs. That is just my honest opinion mind you after building 3 PC's that cost me a fortune. Never again.

I am still using a PowerBook G4 I bought in June of 2003 as my primary home computer, though it certainly doesn't kick butt anymore.

I'm looking to buy one of the new MacBook Pros soon, and I can only hope that it lasts 7 years like my current laptop.

Folks, while I appreciate you like your MacBook Pros (so do I) this was never about laptops, it was about desktop CPU expansion/upgrade.

First let me mention that I'm apple certified and I used to (long ago) have a PC repair and upgrade bussiness.

Oh ... can anyone find me a PC board that is dual channel and has 16 slots? Tough to find and expensive. In fact they have only started to ship recently, two and a half years after Apple made it possible on the Mac. (of course that much memory until recently was mostly for show ... but I digress)

Cheers.

16 RAM Slots? Why not ask for 32 RAM slot and 4 CPU sockets while you are at it? Where is the Mac Pro with that many RAM banks a CPU scokets?

Not trying to start Mac VS. PC rant but you ask for 16 RAM banks and I delivered much more than that.

Cheers!
