Can you run apps from a non-bootable drive?

My G4 is getting really slow (I do regular disc permissions and run Disc Warrior...it's just clogged up and old- like me), so I was going to do a clean install, and maybe upgrade my HDD while I'm at it. (Still using the original 40gigger for OS and Apps).

But there are a few of my software discs that have gone by the wayside over the years. I was thinking of taking out my current drive as is and putting it in an external housing. Then buying a new HD and re-installing the OS. If I do that, could I run the apps I don't have discs for (so I can't re-install on the bootable disc) from the external?

Thanks

Depdns on how the config files for the apps are set. If they point the app toward the original drive itself, you're probably hosed. Even worse if the app itself is hard-coded to be on the root drive (but most programmers these days aren't that stupid).

Batutta's suggestion is a good one -- Carbon Copy Cloner works great. Some apps still need to be re-verified/authorized even after this, but not reinstalled.
