Can you recommend a good slide scanner?

I have about a thousand or so slides taken over the years by me and my Dad and would to scan some of them. Years ago I did have a Nikon LS20 scanner which was ok for negatives but only average for slides. And now it won't work with my current computer. So any suggestions? I am in the UK.

Alas my scanner was an internal model that used a SCSI card so might be tricky to connect up to a newer PC. Also the scans the last time I used it were getting very dark so suspect its LEDS were on the way out.

Thanks for your replies.
I may well rebuild one of my old PCs to use my old Nikon scanner. But I must admit although it produced quite good scans from negatives - scans from slides were quite noisy in the darker areas of the image. I have been looking at Amazon and have seen two possible choices if I decided to go for a new scanner.

Overall I would more likely go for the Canon. But overall the cheap scanner got good reviews and wondered if it worth having a punt on it? I really only intend to use any scanned slides online, with perhaps occasional 5 x 7 printouts.

Or would using a macro lens on my Nikon D5100 and a light box be another possible choice? And which macro would be best without going over the top in price?

I bought my wife a Pacific Image slide scanner 7250u. It has digital ICE technology which is great to deal with dust removal. It is slow at highest resolution setting but does a great job. I think you will be disappointed in any device less than $100.
