Can you preview..?

Well, I finally finished my first short in post. It's all edited and done and I'm about to make an output of the nested timeline in FCP4. The problem is i'm running a dual 450 mhz processor G4 and it's going to take like a day or two to output a quicktime of this 22 minute film. I don't want to go through all of that only to find out, "hey, that's not how I want it to look. Now I have to tweak it and start over".

Is there a way I can render a smaller piece of my final output to make sure I'm getting what I want before going through the long wait to do the whole thing?

Thanks in advance

Re: Can you preview..?

You mention you have a nested timeline. Does that mean you have multiple, smaller sequences nested into a final 22 minute sequence? If so, just export one of the smaller sequences for testing. If not, I believe you can set In and Out points in the timeline and export just what is between the In and Out points. For example, set an In point in the timeline and an Out point 3 to 5 minutes later.

Yes, it does mean I have multiple smaller sequences. It's basically the entire cut of the movie (you know, all the little slivers of pieces of video put together to make the final flik). I nested the whole thing so as to drop a 2:35:1 matte across the whole thing.

Had to do that because we shot on an anamorphic adapter and we cropped in camera for the 2:35:1 frame, but some of the special effects I ended up doing affected the black bars on the footage because it's saved as pixel data.

Thanks for the response. I'll try adjusting the in and out points. It didn't occur to me to do that because when I go to output a quicktime, it doesn't give me a menu option to output from in to out or otherwise. Does it just do that automatically when you set an in and out point on the timeline? Or is there another menu someplace I have to check off?

Re: Can you preview..?

No other menu. Just set In and Out points and export as you normally do.

I don't know for sure if this works. I was going to try this last night myself, so, I set In and Out points for about a two minute section of a 21 minute sequence. When I went to export FCE told me that the In point was too close to a chapter marker and that the marker would be ignored. I didn't mind because I was just doing a test. I decided, though, just to output the whole sequence.

I still think setting In and Out points will work. Do three to five minutes, or whatever you think you need for a good test. Give it a try and post your results.

Re: Can you preview..?

Yeah but that wouldn't show me how my nested file is exporting, just the lone clip.

Thanks for the responses, I managed to fix all my problems. Now I just have to wait another 2 days for it to render. God I need a G5 :)
