Can you pick the camera and lens ? Venice / DXL2 / Alexa 65 and lenses

Your mileage may vary depending on who you work for.

The above is all that needs to be said for us to agree.

Some people in their own markets will require an exact model to compete. Others will have their Canons or Sonys chosen every time because they are well-known and companies like Blackmagic or Kinefinity sound weird. And the rest will be fortunate to use any camera from any decade they would like.

So if SJX is in a position in which the Canon "commands respect", he would have already made his decision.

Does it looks like he was putting a lot of weight in commanding respect to you? To me it looks like he just mentioned that as a possible passing advantage, right before discrediting it as not important for him.

I didn't make an issue; I made it crystal clear so he gets that lingering thought out of his mind.

Respect isn't the same as client perception.

I think this is why I have an aversion to owning cameras.

They define who you are and what you can do.

I’d hate to be hired because of a camera that I own.

I think it’s great that someone is still rocking an F35...if they can make it work and get great results then all power to them. I understand that there’s a PERCEPTION that a certain brand of camera be used, but a long long time ago when I was doing this kind of work, I’d try to talk to the client about what they want.

If the client is dictating a camera, especially one that you don’t think is the right choice, then I think it’s back on us to educate our clients as to why we make these choices.

I don’t assume I’m using the same camera for each job because they all do different things. In fact that’s why I use different cameras on the same job.

Why can’t it be a conversation with the client ?

I just can’t come at the idea that you have to simply “look” the part....as opposed to DOING the part....

Yes, I know there’s a zillion reasons why a client WOULD request a certain camera, as opposed to what you turn up on set with when they’re expecting someone to make some content....

I was not thinking of buying camera based on respect on set. I just mentioned it as I know canon is better known. But I said I didn't care for it. So, what is the cheapest 4k camera with 35mm sensor, ND, at least 10 bit 422 internal or external, slomo over 60p and at least clean ISO 800? Brand new or used, new or old. Not as large as F35 or Alexa.

Since you mentioned external then the JVC LS300 is the cheapest and sometimes found for around $1200 on eBay.

Has everything you mentioned but would require a recorder for 10-bit 4K/60p (if you mean 4K/60p in your specs). [A Ninja V would be the cheapest which would make this overall package the least expensive in the bunch.]

Otherwise, it is a toss-up between the cameras you've already narrowed down and others:

URSA Mini 4.6K, C500 (recorder), FS7, FS700 (recorder), FS5 (recorder), and C200B (but would need to convert RAW in post if that's okay).

And Z Cams with ND module.

And new Canons with ND adapter (1.5 - 9 stops).

That's it; nothing else unless more $$$ is used.

Yes. This is what I thought. I'm just not sure I'm ready to gamble on BMD. So I might end up with C500. At least I know it will work and won't bite me if a bit underxposed. Best would be rent both to test. But finding C500 mk1 to rent now is probably hard. I have no interest in FS5 or FS7. Too video looking for me. Also too much money. You can buy nicer image cameras for the price. C200B also seems over budget.

The last Steadicam workshop I took several years ago, Canon had donated a bunch of C500 MkI’s to be used and just straight out of camera the image was beautiful, even in un-lit, dark parts of scenes that were nothing but natural/available light. And the motion cadence was great, too.
