i really don't want to pay $200 to rent an external monitor, when i have access to a very expensive apple display. if anyone knows how to do this, please let me know!
What inputs does the monitor have? You may be able to do it with a DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor. If it has DVI then you could probably do it too. The converters are pretty inexpensive, I'd just grab one and test it.
EDIT: Actually, that converter won't work, it's for connecting a DisplayPort source to an HDMI monitor, you need one the other way around.
Well you can certainly do this with EOS Utility Live View (the software that came with your 7D), using the USB cable that came with the camera. The refresh rate is not 100%, but its fine for checking focus, framing, colors etc. You can also control your camera from the computer. I do this often in controlled shoots using a T3i and MacBook 17" laptop. The only issue is the length of the cable.
You can use any monitor or tv with an HDMI input, they will work fine (at 720p on the red one). What you're paying for in a proper monitor is the more robust hdsdi connection and often a monitor more up to spec colour reproduction wise. If it's just for your director then use a tv and you'll be in the ballpark.
