Can you crop to 2.40:1 in Vegas?

Can you crop a full framed 4:3 image shot with tape masking the monitor to 2.40:1 and but bars accordingly in post in Vegas?

This might be a wider size than the standard letterbox or 2.35:1.

You can easily create this effect with either Pan/Crop or by creating a graphic (matt) that uses an alpha channel where you want you video to show through.

Gary,

So I can create a graphic matte, exactly where I planned for in my taped field monitor right for the extra wide 2.40:1?

How is resolution / picture quality lost when shot at full 4:3 in the dvx100a then cropped at 2.40:1?

Thanks Gary, I don't have Vegas 5.0 yet, and this is a feature I wanted to make sure it had before my purchase. So I should do it right? Would I be able to test this feature out on the demo version I can download? how does the demo version differ? I downloaded a different editing software for kicks and for the trial version, after editing I was not allowed to save.

Yes. Use the Media Generator. Start with the Rectangle Gradient and start from there. Or use the Pan-Crop, choose the 1.85:1 preset, and adjust from there.

If you crop and make an anamorphic DVD out of it and then play it on a widescreen TV, picture quality will suffer some because it will be stretching out the picture to fill the space.

You'll have that full functionality in the demo version, and I believe you can render out with it, too, though I think your options are limited.

Re: Can you crop to 2.40:1 in Vegas?

Thanks David.

So I plan on having the bars. I do not know where I would watch a widescreen TV so it is okay. I can fine adjust exactly where I want the bars to be created right by "adjusting from 1.85:1" like you mentioned?

cheers!!

Re: Can you crop to 2.40:1 in Vegas?

Well, if you're doing the mask, there's no specific preset, so you have to adjust until you get there.

If you're doing the crop, yes, you can finely adjust.

If all you're ever going to watch it on is a 4:3 TV, then there's not much to worry about for image quality loss. The unmasked or uncropped portion of the video should be pretty much unaffected.

How do you guys get the exact 2.40:1 ratio? By measuring it out on the monitor?
