Can Vegas do this? Special project saving..

This might sound a bit strange...

I have some projects with a lot of large clips, and I know I'm not going to be needing the extra bits from each clip. But, I'd like to maintain the project file itself and backup the bits from each clip used in the project file (essentially I want to be able to re-edit and re separate the footage out, particularly the audio, if I have to). Is there anyway to automatically have Vegas export all the clips on the timeline into new smaller files, so I can just backup these bits and maintain the project structure?

I hope that makes sense...

Makes perfect sense. In Avid and Final Cut it's called Consolidating... I really don't know if Vegas has an equivalent.

Great question.

I'm not sure I have what you're asking correct, but...yes, I believe so.
When you save the project in Vegas, there's a checkbox that says, "Copy and trim media with project". When you check that and click save, you will get another prompt that will ask if you want to copy all the souce media or create trimmed copies of the source media. If you choose the latter, you can then set the extra amount you want on the head & tail of each clip.

This is how I archive my project edits. Hope that helps.

That's EXACTLY what I was looking for! Don't know how I missed that. Thank you!

Ran a test and it does exactly what I was hoping for. Only weird thing is Vegas is telling me my version of Vegas Pro 8.0c isn't licensed for Cineform HD encoding (which I thought came bundled with Pro 8?).

Think maybe I need to reinstall Vegas. Weird.

edit to add: reinstalling Vegas fixed the issue. I suspect it was because I had installed Neo Player and it had overwritten the original Cineform HD codec.

Just one comment, you mentioned being able to re-edit the audio. Not sure if that would include audio that wasn't currently in your timeline, but if so, it will have only saved the portion of audio that was being used. So, if you need audio that wasn't used, make sure to go grab that and save it from your original folders with your original footage.

Been doing this for several years with Vegas. Back up projects to Data DVD and have been able to go back and re edit audio and Video. We usually save a 5 sec head and tail.
