Can this work?

Okay

I have this guy who wants to shot an instructional dance vid. He wants the music playing while he talks on wireless lav but he wants to plug the music into one channel into the camera and the lav into the 2nd channel. You can imagine the cuts and takes and rewinds and play we gotta do. I suggested we add the nice clean music in post but hes hardass about it

Now, with the lavalier in one channel only. Will it okay if I were to copy and paste that one channel into two channels in post, making it stereo? I did it for one of his videos(not shot by me) and it worked.

I just want to do it right the first time. Thanks

That doesn't make it "stereo", juts 2-channel mono.

But, yes, that'll work.

If he wants the music to be genuine stereo, you'll have to put in a fresh copy in post....

...which you should do anyway.

But having the music there in camera is not a bad idea....it will make it easier to sync up the fresh copy while editing.

Well two monos from one subject talking through a lav wouldnt really bring an end to the world. So I'll be happy with that.

Believe me, my idea was to play the music in the background low vol during shoots and use that as a reference to sync audio.

For some reason, hes hardass in doing this way.

Too bad he's old school about things. anyways. if you do want to put in you music in later into post... make sure you use some type of marker before each take or a countdown before each shoot. IE a clapper board so you can sync it up easier in post. Otherwise you will be wasting a lot of time trying to sync everything up. Not to mention if he wants a lot of cuts with different angles during the song... you will need to have some type of control. Or you will be lost. The ultimate would be to rent a timecode clapper board that is synced up to you camera or DAT so you can make accurate EDL list from it and splice it together easily.

In the scenrio you describe Diz, the dialog track is going to have the music on it. The music will bleed into his microphone and create huge sync issues if you want to add music in post.

best

Why the heck would you rent a TC slate when you can't jam that TC into the DVX????????????????

If your using a TC slate you would sync it up to a DAT like the FOSTEX PD-4. It would be better sound than what the DVX will do at 24bit vs 16bit. Therefore he wouldn't be in need to hook it up to the DVX at all but to use the DVX like regular film camera without audio. Then add the dialog from the dat in post.

But in this scenerio ...there is music in the background that will definitely bleed into the lavalier mike which will be a problem and it just wouldn't be worth messing with.

One option is that you can always plan to ADR the vocals in later as a V/O track. Then all you would have to do is shoot the project as MOS format only. Then add everything in later in post with quality dialog and stereo music.

I've seen dance videos where the instructors talk when the music is not playing, and they dance when the music is playing - no talking. That's the only easy way to do your video. If they talk during the song, then the music will bleed into your voice track as Wabbit said. Then you have to take the scene as is or use voice overs.

Diz - I know you said this guy is insistant on doing things his way but there are better ways as others have mentioned.
You should try to get him to record all the moves with no mic, edit everything together, video-wise, then have him watch the video and record a voice-over for it. That would be one way.

Thanks guys for the advice, shoot is tomorrow.

Yea, pretty much Im leaning towards using timecode as a reference. Such as TC 00:01:12:72 it plays on track 12 00:34. But its gonna be a pain in the ass when we have to cut and doing another take, so its gonna be rewinding like crazy on the cd player.

Besides, I just found out it wouldnt really work if I did it his way. Once I plug in the headphone jack XLR adapter to the CD player, the speakers will be muted. I'll have a talk with him, its Tonys turn to kick ass

Get paid up front.

If he insists you do it his way, he's NOT going to be a happy camper when he sees the result, and may express his displeasure by refusing to pay.

you can do the trick with the inductive loop and receiver inside the instructor ear , you need transmitter that connected to the music source , inductive loop that connected to receiver and sits around the talent neak and inductive receiver in his ear , for more people you can add few receivers in the same way .
of course it can be done with large inductive loop and big amp around the dancing floor , so each person who would have inductive receiver inside his ear will hear the music .
if you need keep the people around dancing to the specific bit and you dont need they would heard the exactly music you can place trumpet which give very low fq bit that could later been cleaned from the sound track
thats what we usually do in movies :-)

I f you ask me I would just tell him I am recording the music, and plug his mic in to input 2, and record stereo, and then use the small amount of music bleed from his mic as a reference and do the song in post, but to make him feel better about himself plug in your fake audio into input 1, just dont use it, and he will be more then happy with the results, any he wont b any the wiser
