Can the Steadicam Pilot be modded to pass HD-SDI through its vertical post?

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum and can't seem to find a discussion of this, so thought I'd ask: I'm considering purchasing a Steadicam Pilot but would like to substitute either an Atomos Samurai or an SD Pix 240 for the stock monitor. To do that, I'd need to pass an HD-SDI cable through the vertical post. Anyone tried this or know of a webpage showing such a mod? I can cut the BNC connector off one end of the cable to make fishing it easier, and then get a crimping tool and new connector to re-attach after fishing it through. Thoughts?

I've seen this mod done for HDMI cables on the Glidecam HD4000, but want to know if the Steadicam Pilot could be similarly modded.

Thanks,
Andrew

I think i read somewhere that there simply isnt enough space in the center post for this to be possible..Besides... dont those monitors have composite in? You dont need a HD image downthere, you need a visible for framing. Also check those two screens in direct sunlight. The best outdoor monitor ive seen at a low price is the Marshall 651stx

Thanks for the monitor suggestion. Actually, though, for the setup I described I'd need an HD-SDI cable because the two devices I'm considering mounting are not just monitors, they're HD-SDI external recorders. I've also found that Belden makes a tiny diameter RG-179 cable (the 179DT) that can carry up to 3G-SDI for up to 70 feet or so. The downside is that the monitors on those devices are just 5", which might not be big enough for the operator to see them. Partly because of that, I'm now thinking of tethering the operator to an assistant who'll handle the video recorder, again using the 179DT cable. Lots of steadicam operators seem to be able to work tethered, though I'm sure it's not their first pick. Should have the equipment soon and will get this worked out then.

Thanks again,
Andrew

Keep us posted then because I am also interested in this.
