Can songs be stripped of the vocals?

I still remember 15+ years ago learning about listening to speakers
in A - (minus) B

Usually you listen to 2 speakers
A and B (A + B)

If you take the 2 positives (left and right channel) of your speaker leads
and put them into 1 speaker. 1 in pos 1 in ground

you are now listening to A minus B
Basicly everything that was the loudest is now the quietest
and everything that was quiet is now loud.
I dont think it was just a regular phase trick. At least it sure doesnt sound that way
coming out of 1 speaker.
Very cool to listen to vocalists clearing their throat..hearing buried instruments..etc.

Im sure there is probably a digital version of doing that these days
and this was slightly off topic but ..ahh the memories.

I worked with a sound designer in theatre that did something like that with four speakers. Two were wired normally and two had the A-B and inverted A-B. You got this very strange swirling surround where the placement depended on content. No control but a =very interesting sound.

There are a number of digital things that one can do such as A-B, or playing the material in reverse, to get ALL satanic messages of all known recorded (and now digitized) material...

One can also reverse musician materal. In the olden days, one had to slow down the turntable, figure out the fingering for various riffs, then play them full speed over and over, wearing out the record... now its just set speeed 25% keeping the frequency the same (sort of...), or heck one of thos niffty 'note identifier' shareware programs..., figure it out, then play full speed any number of times, until one is sick of the riff...

Taking the vocals out of a mix is like trying to take the chocolate chips out of a bag of chocolate chip cookies.

Now, for all the older folks out there, how many grooves are one side of the average-length LP record?

It is doable. Try Adobe Audition. It has an effect to remove vocal from a song. The song has to be in stereo channels. The feature was inherited from Cool Edit which was acquired by Adobe to become Audition.
