Can someone suggest a Focus Pull

Hi,

Can someone suggest a half way decent, and yet inexpensive, focus pull? I'm considering the Zacuto model, but it's so damn expensive! I love the Zacuto stuff, but the prices are just crazy!

Suggestions?

I'm assuming you're talking about a Follow Focus. The Indifocus is pretty cheap but their accessories aren't standard spec and won't fit with any other FF out there. I played with one a while back and there's surprisingly very little play, although the build quality is just ok and it's an unwieldy design. I would say the Redrock unit at $650 is a great option, very nice build and very little play.

Hi Huv Vu, thanks so much for the reply. Yes, I definitely mean a Follow Focus. I'll definitely check out Redrock, thanks so much.

My favorite is the chrosziel follow focus keeping price in mind. Not sure the model number, but I think it's their one model meant for video. No play and decent design. I don't know if the redrock follow focus has improved, but the last time I tried it, the play made it pretty much unusable. I ended up just making marks on the lens...

Really though, if you're going to spend money on anything, spend it on your follow focus. I would much rather just pull directly on the lens than use a follow focus with play. It just ends up being extremely deceiving.

I've got the Zacuto and its quite impressive even considering the price - full adjustable to zero backlash, built like a tank and quick to adjust. Can't say a single bad thing about it. Sure it would be nice if it was cheaper but its still well worth its cost.

What does play mean in this context again? And how much is that zacutto one? I know the cinevate is supposed to be one of the best but it is expensive.

Ryan, that was my unit that you tried right? I think that version had the old gearbox that had a ton of play. I've since got the new gearbox for the Redrock and I can tell you that there's very little play, almost on par with that Chroziel.

"Play" refer to the amount of slack between the FF gear and the knob. If there's too much play (more than 1-2 mm is considered a lot) then the knob will turn freely for a bit first before actually making the gear move, which can throw off your timing and your focus marks.

Thanks 3xm.

**UPDATE**

I just checked out the follow focus for Cinevate, wow! that's nice! I was considering going with Zacuto, but this is gorgeous!

I have the Indifocus FF and being as though I have never used one before I can't really tell you if it is good or bad. I have had no issues with it whatsoever. But I know Just having one is a godsend.
