I'm wondering if a cd/dvd drive in a laptop I have here might be just dead. Computer is a Dell Inspirion 1000, Windows XP. In My Computer the drive is listed, but when a disc is inserted the drive will not recognize it. Message just pops up , ' Please insert disc.' It doesn't read cds or dvds (it doesn't even spin when I insert a disc), and the light continues to flash. My OS recognizes that I have that DVD drive, but the drive itself doesn't recognize media.

When a disc is inserted, the light blinks rythmically for a short bit and then that message pops up. If it is a virus .... that is the only drive on the computer... so I can't even format/ reinstall windows since I have no way to input new antivirus software.

Should I just replace the drive?

No its not my computer. It seems that the drive is just not working
The lens and drive apear to be spotless, although I guess there is always dirt/dust you can't see.

Right now I'm doing this:

command promt > WinMSD to check to see if there are any hardware conflicts etc...

Otherwise I think I could go to device manager and remove teh drive ( it came with the computer ) and then reboot to see if it detects it?

sometimes a blast of compressed air knocks some sense into it. but dont shake the can or do it at an angle.

It sounds to me like a hardware failure with the drive itself. If the warranty is expired it might be cheaper to buy an external (USB) CD/DVD drive rather than have the internal drive replaced.

if you go that route, its usually cheaper to buy the drive and stick it in an external case.

yes it was the drive itself.. and i will tell them that maybe they could try an external....

Thanks for the help and suggestions
