Can someone explain "prores proxy"?

Hi, all. I'm not new to editing (Premiere) but definitely new to the use of "prores proxy," which sounds mysterious and wonderous to me. Could someone please explain to me what it is, or point me to a place where I can find out out to export using it -- and what the benefits are? Would be much appreciated.

Many thanks!

Prores proxy is a low bit rate version of Apple I-frame codec called Prores. It is mostly use for offline editing where you don't need the massive data of the original shoot.

If you are on a Mac you can export prores if you are on Windows than it is a bit tricky...

Thanks, Vic. I currently edit C100 footage and often transcode to prores for its strength on the color correcting side.

What I'm asking is, is the proxy prores option there for exporting at a low quality -- but I don't get the value of it really. Does one export an existing edit project to proxy prores and re-import to edit because it takes less computing power than, say, avchd? The reason I'm asking, people always seem to talk about exporting as if it is a method to use after an edit ...

I guess what I'm asking is, what specifically is it used for? What is its place in the edit workflow?

As I said, it is mainly used for offline editing. If you want to color correct Prores I suggest to you the higher bit rate versions of Prores. Namely Prores 422 (HQ) or Prores 422.
