Can Software Predict A Hit Movie?

That is long, and a little bit ridiculous. Give the script to a 5 year old to shoot on his parents minidv cam. It will flop.

For those that don't want to read the entire thing, there is a summary on the second link down from the headline:

Auto-Tune music, what about movies?

I would have to see some of their reports to judge whether this is actually anything revolutionary. The article is incredibly vague about the specifics of what they are grading in the scripts they are judging. As is, it sounds like they are saying that if a script has more elements that appeal to a wide audience that the script will find a wider audience, which, if you think about it, is merely a truism.

The music algorithm sounds more interesting, and I can actually see how that could work.

Movies are just a little too complicated to judge everything based off of the script alone, and most people are making their decisions to watch a movie based on things like marketing, not the script of a film.

Music works differently, because it is played on free radio a bunch of times and then requests and singles purchases determine whether it is a success or not.

People have to decide to watch / pay for a movie before they have seen it.

@papa, I'm sure that it assumes that it will be a "hollywood" movie... meaning that it will be shot by professional directors and played by professional actors, I just can't see the program predicting accurately box office hits for indies.

@ Ruffo, they must be doing something right they're still in business...

@agohn, agreed, the music algorithm sound much more interesting... wish there was a more in depth look in to the company that does the music software.
