Can I write on my computer at the same time film is running on FCP?

So, I take copious notes on my captured film so i can edit easier. I used to watch movie files in Quicktime to do this because, if I have a movie running in FCP and then I start writing in Textedit, the film stops playing. However, since moving to SD cards from film, I have a problem since Quicktime only displays the time for each clip, but the clip time info in FCP is different.

I need to figure out a way to have something play in FCP but also type into a program like Textedit at the same time so I can take notes. Is there a way to do this?

Try using the Log and Transfer option. The process you are speaking of is called logging. The benefit of doing it this way is the data will always be associated with that video. I know some cameras are not able to use this option but you did not give us any info that would help give you more specific instructions.

Such as Camera used, FCP version, etc.

I'm using FCP 7 and am HMC-150. I could do note taking during logging but the notes get long. I take close to verbatim transcripts of interviews. Is there a limit to how long a log note can be?

I do not know if there is a limit. I do know that in Video/Film editing notes are called a log. Also you can change/edit/add fields in the meta data options in FCP.

I don't believe you can play a clip in FCP and then select any other application to work on. Even selecting different windows in FCP will stop a clip from playing. The only thing that I think you can do is listen to the audio from your clip while in Log and Capture. From FCP help. "Logging a clip": "You can listen to your audio while you log by selecting the Preview checkbox in the Clip Settings tab of the Log and Capture window. When this option is selected, you hear your audio on the output selected in the Sound pane of Mac*OS*X System Preferences. (In the Sound pane, click Output and select a device for sound output.)"

Correct- if you switch to another app in FCP, playback will stop. QuickTime Player does not have this limitation.
