Can I use my old G4 to help in rendering?

I have an old G4 400mhz desktop that has been regulated to paper weight status after the purchase of my G5. Can I network it or set it up somehow to help with rendering? If so, how do I go about doing this? If not, what is everyone else doing with their old workhorses?

Thanks for the help.

I wouldn't bother, really. A 400mhz G4 is going to render real, real slow, compared to the G5. I don't know how you'd hook it up to edit on the G5, then switch over to render your edits on the G4. Sounds like more hassle than its worth. I have more old Macs sitting around than I can find uses for. I can't just toss them, and its not worth trying to sell them for nothing. I have a G5 thats my main system. A 15" Powerbook thats my best friend... A G4 800mhz iMac that is mostly the kids iChat computer, an old G3 thats my SCSI scanner system, a G3 500mhz iBook thats mostly relegated to DVD player, and I use one program occasionally thats still OS9. And two older Macs that are basically worthless. Oh yeh, one old Toshiba laptop thats 200mhz Pentium 2 or 3 with Windows 95 on it. The only PC I ever owned. I mostly use that as a fly swatter. Best use I ever found for it.

You can install the compressor xgrid client on the G4 and use it as part of a cluster when compressing for DVD or web. Same deal if you are using Shake.

You could film it falling off of a building. I have always wanted to see a DVX film a computer fall from a building. That would be great fun!

Thanks for the info. I might try the XGRID thing, or, even better, go to Maryland and film kylelewis1 falling from a building.
