Can I use my iPhone wall charger to charge my Tascam DR-100?

Can I use my iPhone wall charger to charge my Tascam DR-100? It plugs directly into the wall and allows you to plug a USB into it. Will this hurt the DR-100 battery? It says it outputs 5V. Will it take just as long to charge as if it were plugged into the computer? I am just really not up for buying something that I really do not need to buy (I am sure you undertand).

Interesting thought as the wallwarts for the DR100 have been on backorder for quite a while and you need one to make the DR100 fully functional when plugged into a CPU.

Have you checked the wattage of the iPhone charger vs the DR100? If the charger wattage exceeds the need of the DR, that would be a good place to start. There are lots of 5V power supplies out there, I suppose the question is: Is there anything smart about the power supply or is it just a straight transformer? if it is just a transformer, then it should be fine.....if the plug polarity is ok.

There has been some industry initiative (cell phones) to make most gizmos use standard plugs and universal power supplies.

There is a USB spec on how much current a USB device can draw. If the Tascam conforms to that, and the iPhone charger is conforming to the USB spec, then...

do the plug and sniff test... bakelite burning smell indicates 'not good'...

Absolutely. USB has definite specifications that it is 5V within a small tollerance, and the current is limited as well. I would fully expect that the iPhone charger would work with the DR100. And if it doesn't, there is pretty small risk, IME.

Your Tascam device will also be designed to be plugged into dodgy USB sockets and survive with an internal voltage regulator. The worst thing that can happen (probably...) is that it just won't charge.

I don't know about the iphone chargers but I have used another wallwart usb charger with the DR-100, and have also used a 12v car charger with it. And the DR-100 can be charged either thru it's usb port, or thu the 12v dc input jack. I have used both and in fact, have powered my DR-100 for long periods of time thru the 12v port, providing power from the NP1 of my Alphamix.
