Can I use an older FCP on a TiPb to edit HD?

I have an older TiPb, G4, 800Mhz, 512, 15 inch with an old version of FCP 3.0 on it and running OSX 10.3.9. I'll have about 10 hours of 24p footage from my HVX on hds and want to edit to a 20 minute piece using simple cuts, nothing fancy. What is the earliest version of FCP to edit HD with P2 input? 5.1.3? Will it work on my old Pb, even if slow? If so, where do I go to buy such an old upgrade?

P2 Materials would work as of 5.0 I believe. 5.0.4 had problems with it though (its mentioned in an Apple white paper). 5.1 (the universial binary) and up are more stable with HVX HD footage. 5.1.4 being the most stable I believe (don't use 5.1.3, it broke a bunch of stuff and hence 5.1.4). Of course now, even that is "obsolete" with FCS 2 and FCP 6 shipping (and from the looks of it, well worth the investment).

You won't find 5.1 upgrades anymore from the major spots. You could try your local craigslist or eBay or such. You might find someone selling a 5.1 version. I believe though you can upgrade to FCP 6 (FCS 2) from any older version of FCP (so I guess they'll send the full discs, just want to make sure you've owned FCP at some point) for a fairly reasonable price ($499?). You might want to look into that.

I don't know if your machine will be up to the task though. Even if you find a copy of 5.1 to use, I'm not sure even that will work for you. I think with the HVX footage you're going to need a significant upgrade to your editing situation, or rent some time out at a post facility. Good luck.

cheers.

Thanks for the reply. I did buy FCP (twice) so I could upgrade for something like $699 (that other price is if you are upgrading from Studio I believe). I was hoping I could get by with my current system but it looks like I will have to get some hardware once I'm back, maybe via craigslist.
