Can I Use A Canon MiniDV Cam To Capture My 24p?

I've heard mixed stories on this that if you don't use the dvx100 to capture from you won't get the true 24p... using another camera seems like the inexpensive way to do this... or should i use a deck? And if so... what deck? I posted this question in my last topic but i think it got lost in all the other questions...

..you can use any cam.. it will make no difference. just be sure you stick to the same tapes on both cams.

The DVX records 24P to tape in a 60i format. Your NLE knows how to extract the frames, not the camera. As far as the video itself is concerned, it's all 60i, so any DV camera (or deck) can play it back.

Are people using external decks and cheap MiniDV cameras to reduce wear on the DVX's heads? Anyone use the Panasonic GS9 as a deck or an external capture device?

Re: Can I Use A Canon MiniDV Cam To Capture My 24p

I had no luck with capturing GS9 using FCP and timecode. FCP could never read the timecode. Someone mentioned it worked for them but nI ever found out if the timecode was truly workign or if they were just doing a raw capture. (Image and sound came through fine)

I'd probably suggest a camera a step or two higher than the GS9 in any event. S-Video out would be nice for external monitor which the GS9 didn't have. The other issue is if you need to record some other video sources. Some cameras have A/V connectiosn that serve as inputs as well as outputs. My old Sony TRV11 does this and works fine with FCP. I had hoped to use a panasonic to allow battery and charger switching as need be. Thought it might be more compatible but that doesn't seem to be the case.

The only thing you can do is to buy a camera with a good return policy (i.e. no 15% restocking) Firewire alone and timecode in specs doesn't mean it will work.

I have a Canon Optura (the original baby!) that I used as my main cam before I got the DVX...it's now used for family movies and as a deck.

I've heard the Canon ZR-80 is sometimes used as a deck. I'm thinking of buying one, but I'm wondering if there are any timecode transfer issues. Are there any ZR-80 owners that can comment?

BTW, if I'll be transferring to Premiere Pro 1.5.

I just answered my own question. I got a ZR80 and it works fine. No timecode problems and no dropped frames.

Re: Can I Use A Canon MiniDV Cam To Capture My 24p

On a high end miniDV shoot I was recently on, the camera crew was doing something totally genius - they had one chip Canons mounted to the cold shoes of their DVX's connected via firewire, and they were making backups as they shot. Brilliant idea, especially if you're doing something long form.
