Can i speed up my computer by making still images smaller?

Can i speed up my computer by making still images smaller?

Does it make sense to change the resolution or dpi of images that I import into a project? Will this speed things up at all? If so, how can I do this?
 
I've found that VERY large files (30+ meg) and multiple files of this size eventually has resulted in degraded performance on my system. Reducing the size/footprint has almost always solved this problem for me. However, I've found very little impact on performace using dozens of near screen-sized jpeg or tga images. Just watch out of those large PSD files :thumbsup:
