Can I run use an AJ-1200HD deck as a recorder for the HVX-200?

Hi all:

Can I use an AJ-1200HD or the new AJ-1400HD deck as an HD recording deck for the HVX-200? We have some long interviews and it seems that just shooting HD tape would be a more efficient solution than going through the P2 card drill.

Thinking of putting deck in the next room over for noise issues and running a 25 foot FW cable from the HVX?

Anyone used this workflow before or know if it's possible?

Thanks,

Dan

Yeah, you can.... but if you want to record in anything other than, 1080/60i, 1080/59.94i, 1080/50i, 720/60P, 720/59.94P, use a FIREWIRE CONNECTION, as componet outs from the camera won't mark active frames. You do have to get an optional Firewire card for it but it's only an additional $1800 or so. You can rent one from Zacuto for $575 a day with a Firewire card.

Thanks for the advice Punk.

We will probably try renting one to see how this workflow works for our needs. We shoot a lot of LONG interviews in our work and doing the P2 shuffle is workable but the archiving requirements are driving us crazy, I am spending 8-20 hours a week archiving P2 stuff to HDs, DVDs and DLT, it's a pain.

Love the HVX-200 and P2 but it is really not working out for us as well as we had hoped. Freekin dual layer DVDs that only hold one P2 card take 48 minutes to burn. Multiply that times the two camera, four hour shoot I did yesterday and you get a picture of how P2 is killing us as far as time and efficiency.

We now have full time P2 archivist on staff and even he can't keep up with six producers shooting every day on P2. Most of the other producers are afraid of P2 and are still shooting on the Z1s and XL-1Hs but we are having major problems getting HDV into our Nitris using the Miranda box. So, ironically, we are having to also dub all of the HDV footage from the other cams onto DVCProHD tape with the 1200 as well. So we have taken two steps forward with HDV and P2 and now we are taking two steps backwards in backing up everything to DVCProHD tape. Ridiculous!

Best,

Dan
