Can I hook up an OST 802 directly to a recorder like h4n or DR40?

Maybe i'm not explaining correctly. I realize that different types of mics will give me better results in that particular situation. What I'm asking for is sort of a worst case scenario. Obviously I wouldn't shoot with a portable recorder directly on camera expecting great results, but i do wonder what I can expect with a DR07 or a Dr40 vs the sony M10 having the different pickup patterns if they're mounted on camera. the audio in this setup may end up in something like a blooper reel for instance.
Even in something like a blooper reel though I'd rather have the action in front of the camera be louder/clearer than that on the sides/back. This is why i'm curious about the XY pattern vs AB or omni

First of all, X/Y and A/B are stereo patterns. They do pick up better from the front than they do the rear but stereo means they're going to be rather wide around on the front side - after all, stereo needs to cover the spread of a sound stage from the left side over through center and on to the right side. Stereo does not pic out selected sounds within a broad sound field, it picks up the whole field. The single hyper pointed directly at the subject and recording mono would be about the same or a bit more sensitive to noise directly towards the rear but would pick up less toward the sides at 90 or 270 degrees than would a pair of mics in a stereo array.

XY, Omni and AB should all suck about the same when mounted on the camera.

now that's the type of answer i was looking for :) well done, sir.

anyways, I bit the bullet and got the M10. Will play with that and the ost802 tonight. I may post some sort of review since I had trouble finding OST reviews anywhere. I don't have much to compare it to so it'll be more subjective I guess.
