Can FCP take out audio background hum/noise?

I did a search, but couldn't find anything. I got some footage, but the audio has a distracting hum in the background. I'm curious if this could be addressed using fcp. I tried the hum filter but it didn't really do anything.

Any info. would be great. thnx!

Yeah, the audio filters in FCP aren't that great. If you have FCP studio, you should have Soundtrack Pro, which, in the latest version especially, has some nice audio correction filters.

Waves has a nice package of pro audio restoration plug-ins, but they can get kinda pricey and you have to have a DAW to run them.

You can try to use an EQ with a very narrow band and notch out the hum, otherwise your best bet is some sort of noise reduction plugin. These are generally expensive. Some options: Waves Restoration Bundle, Waves Z-Noise, Bias Soundsoap. The others I know of are Pro Tools only.

The way to isolate a frequency with an EQ is to crank up the gain on the EQ band you are using, then sweep the frequency up and down slowly till you hear the noise increase sharply. You can then cut that band and adjust the Q (which increases or decreases the width of the band) till you get good compromise between getting rid of the offending noise and not making the audio sound wierd.

So, short answer: Maybe :)

I have never actually tried, but all my Waves plugins (from Pro Tools) seem to get installed and registered as audio units and show up when I run FCP. I believe any audio-unit plugins you have installed are available for use even with plain vanilla FCP.

You can do quite a few things in Soundtrack Pro for noise reduction. Basically, you'll make a noise print of the offending hum, then use the remove noise option to tweak it and apply it across your clip.
