Can FCP capture like iMovie?

Okay. I can capture just fine using "Capture Now" button. But I like the way iMovie does it: Each time the camera is paused when shooting, it creates an edit point that iMovie recognizes and captures it as a separate clip. I can't seem to figure out how to get FCP to do this automatically. Can anyone help me? I have tried to search for this info, but I've been unsuccessful.

Here's my setup:

iMac G4 17" 1Ghz 768MB Ram
FCP4
AG-DVX100 shot at 24PA (I can remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown just fine.
Sequence settings ar 23.98 FPS

Re: Can FCP capture like iMovie?

I was trying to do the same thing just the other night, and after searching through the manual managed to find the solution, although it doesn't work for 24PN footage that's been reverse telecined.

After importing your clip (or entire tape) with the capture now, select it in the browser and then in the Marker menu select DV Start/Stop Detect which will automatically insert markers anywhere that there is a break in the timecode. To split it all up into separate subclips click the down arrow which will have appeared next to the clip's name in the Browser, select all the markers, and then in the Marker menu select Make Subclip and you should be good to go.

Re: Can FCP capture like iMovie?

Thanks, Marc. That worked... almost.

But for some reason, the start and stop points of the clips that it's created aren't correct. They carry over from a previous or successive clip, not exactly at the start and stop points of the actual clip. Seems kind of hit or miss.

Any ideas why that might be happening?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Can FCP capture like iMovie?

hm..... well, I didn't get it to work either, but I figured it was just becuase I had run my footage through Cinema Tools first to remove the 2:3:2:3 pulldown.......

I ended up just going through the clip and putting markers at the first frame of every split and then doing the Make Subclip command to correctly split things up...

Anybody else had any luck getting this to work correctly?

Re: Can FCP capture like iMovie?

Perhaps it's the 2:3:3:2 pulldown which "confuses" FCP when attemting to establish markers. Since it's stripping every fifth frame, maybe that's why FCP is unable to correctly auto-detect the pauses.

Anyone have a better answer?

Re: Can FCP capture like iMovie?

This is a bug in FCP 4.0 that I reported to Apple sometime last fall; the automatic detection doesn't take into account the frames that have been deleted in the reverse pulldown.

I'm hoping that it's fixed in FCP HD.
