Can AT4073 be used as a handheld?

Hi

I'm planning on buying a AT4073 and a Rode SM3 shock mount, I'm going to have it mounted on my camera most of the time (I know how bad this is generally considered, but I don't think it matters for what I mostly shoot). I plan to occasionally use the Mic for some interviews, is it possible to hold it at the base and use it as you would a hand-held style Mic, or would it be better to get a pistol grip that screws into the shock mount, to reduce handling noise?

You would be better off getting a mic made for that purpose. You can get the EV RE50b for $160 and it is interally protected from pops and shock. It also sounds fabulous and isolates the talent from a noisy enviornment super well.
