I have some footage that I shot with my DVX 100b 24pa and i am using Final Cut Pro to edit. Well I want to take some footage from my timeline and add special effects in After Effects and then import it back into my FCP timeline. Can anyone lead me to the proper settings and steps to do. Thanks in advance.

FCP to AE Round Trip

Right click or control click on the clip in the Browser that is the source of your video file on the FCP timeline. Choose Item properties>Format and note the parameters of your file (aspect ratio (i.e-720x480), codec (i.e.-DV/DVC Pro NTSC), frame rate (i.e.-29.97 or 23.98) and write these down.)

Select the part of your FCP timeline you want to work on in AE by marking in and out around it (You might want to leave a second or pad so it might make it easier to edit it back into your FCP timeline once you're done in AE.).

Go to File>Export>QuicktTime movie. Do not change any parameters, as the defaults should be the format of your current FCP timeline and making iany changes here will only degrade the qulity of your output. Save the resulting file to your HD.

Open AE and import the QuickTime file you exported from FCP into your AE project. Drag the imported footage clip to the New Composition button at the bottom of teh AE Project Window to create a new comp with the same settings and length as the imported file.

Now work your magic in AE (I'm assuming you know what you want to do and how to do it). When done, choose Composition>Add to Render Que. Put the settings to "Best" (of course), and the format to "QuickTime movie". Use the AE output controls to match the settings you wrote down in the first step above, set the file output destination to your FCP project older, and Press "Render".

Wait for AE to fininsh, then return to FCP anf choose File>Import File. Import teh file into the FCP Browser and edit it back into the timeline, replacing the original footage.

Good luck.
