can anybody identify what this piece to this dolly system is?

I was looking around for dolly system and I was debating between buying one and DIY'ing one (although I was leaning more towards DIY) and I came across this dolly on ebay...

I have that tripod dolly that I dont use because, well, its crap. It cant be controlled but anyways. I want to modify it and do the same as above picture and I wanted to see if any of my 'super dvxer's' could identify what that little metal stop sign looking piece is that the wheels are attached to??

any help really be appreciated!

thanks.

could be aluminum hex bar

could be aluminum hex bar

It could be something as simple as aluminum hex bar. You can pick up some hex bar at many of the on-line metal retailers, such as onlinemetals.com - 1'd guess this is some where around 1.25 - 1.5 inches wide by 1.5- 2", but then again is just a guess. Google aluminum hex bar and you'll find what you are looking for.

It does look like aluminum hex bar, cut to size and tapped for the bolt sizes needed. That is pretty smart as the hex bar gives a good angle for the wheels on the track.

Definitely hex bar but notice how the wheels don't contact the pvc piping properly. If you look closely you can see that there is minimal surface area contact which will cause the wheel to deform over time and may cause problems with the smoothness of the shots, especially when weighted down.

Just to add to that thought: The problem with the wheel contact could also have to do with the diameter of the PVC pipe being used. That measurement directly relates to the angle of the wheels on whatever type of truck you're using.

Nothing like the medical biz to hyper-inflate everything. The truth is, it is simply a hexagonal aluminum extrusion like this... http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?id=1113&step=2

Oh you know it. I worked in EMS for over 20 years, and I know first hand that medical equipment, especially emergency medical gear, is vastly overpriced. It makes filmmaking gear look like cheap stuff from Wal Mart.

uhhhh, cheap stuff from Wal Mart..... that is redundant isn't it?
