I am evaluating which software is right for me...
Do I need both Premier Pro 1.5 and AE Pro1.5 ? Can AE Pro do most, if not all, of Premier Pro's functionality ?

Or is Vegas a better mix of NLE+Effects ?

If you want to use only one software do work on your project what would u choose? (Editing and Effects)

AE Pro 1.5
Premier Pro 1.5
Vegas 5

Re: Can AE do Premier's work ?

I don't think you are asking yourself the right question here. You can compare Premiere Pro to Vegas cause they are both editors but you can't really toss After Effects in there cause it isn't really an editor per say it's more of a compositing program... photoshop for video in a way.

If you need to edit video on PC then your options are Premiere or Vegas. Both have their strengths and weeknesses... Vegas big thing is audio and premieres big thing is Adobe integration with other appz... such as After Effects and Photoshop. Do a bit more reaserch or test out Vegas or Premiere and see which suits your needs best.

Depending on the level of productions you would like to create you can accomplish a lot of basic effects and video manipulation in Premiere and Vegas. They do not replace After Effects. While AE does do what premiere does, it's not a realtime video NLE. It is an advance compositing and FX's layering tool.. not a NLE.

The guys who did (are doing) Ancanar (http://www.ancanar.com) used After Effects for both SFX and editing. You can certainly do both in AE! It's a little easier in Premiere of course, as that's what the program is meant to do.

I'd bet Avid would take offense to that...

ha... your right... :) what's funny is I really like avid and use it freqrently... on a mac... I kind of forget about xpress DV just because I have used premiere for so long.

Good point though...
There are a lot of other editors out there but for PC the consensus is usually Pro or Vegas and with mac it is still almost always AVID and Final Cut... (of course media 100 would be offended here too :) )

Re: Can AE do Premier's work ?

i am very very far from being an expert with AE but i do know premiere quite well and i think the best way to answer his question is this...

premiere is meant for doing things like movies, shorts, documentaries etc.

after effects is for the effects in movies or to add things that didn't really exist in the background or to mask out things that were there that you want to make disappear.

after effects is great for pretty short stuff. i can't imagine using after effects for anything longer than a 30 or 60 second commercial.

did i get this right guys? the length of the piece is the simplest thing that guides you in which program you choose to use for the task at hand?

Re: Can AE do Premier's work ?

I don't recomend using AE for editing. AE dosen't have realtime preview so it would be hard to even consider editing. Ah, what do I know, I suck!

Re: Can AE do Premier's work ?

It's really whatever tool you want to use for the job. I use AE for shortform stuff just because I love the absolute control you have over every single aspect of the project. For longer form stuff, I lay it all out in Final Cut, then using Automatic Duck, open it up in AE for finishing.
