can a hdv stream be recorded

....because it's not portable . It seems logical that imovie ( or another app ) on an ios device should be able to capture a hdv stream coming from a firewire ported camcorder using the lightning to thunderbolt...then the thunderbolt to firewire, then a fw800 to 400 adapter. It would be cheaper , smaller and lighter than any firewire recording device available. Wish I had an ios device to experiment...but alas not.

I doubt very much there's any iPhone app which would do this.

imovie ?...I mean, if it could be done in imovie since 2006...but then I've never used ios imovie. It was just an idea instead of ridiculously expensive ( and almost unavailable ) firewire recorders . Maybe even a Touch could do it.

I'm not seeing that iMovie for iOS has any ability to capture from tape.

The problem is going to be the way that those cameras send the data, it apparently doesn't really work to convert to something like USB. So I don't think you are going to find any method to really get this done. I've read about getting a thunderbolt2 to Firewire adapter, but not sure you can really capture a data stream over this kind of adapter. I found nothing suggesting that you could find or make a USB to firewarem not even USB-C 3.1 to firewire.

I think the best way to do this, is buy an old used hdv capture device, or buy and old used computer that still has firewire and use a small utility program to grab and store the (H)DV stream.

David....actually I'm thinking , not about capturing already recorded to tape hdv, but about recording the live stream from the firewire output , say from a sony hdv z1 for example. Yeah...this sounds like someone needs to write a new a ios app. thanks

It's the same either way. Whether it's sending you a stream from tape or live signal, it's 25 Mb HDV in both cases.

Agreed for USB, but he said Thunderbolt, which, as I understand it (but have never tried), would allow streaming.

...they sell lightning to thunderbolt and thunderbolt to firewire 800, and then an 800 to 400 cable, so thunderbolt should be backward compatible. If the old firewire recorders recorded hdv to disk or card, then it seems it should be possible to record the same signal to the drive on an ios device, and then send it back out thru the firewire to the nle. This is interesting .... https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/co...YYASABEgLDUPD_BwE&is=REG&pcur=xCHF&sku=842013

well forget the firewire for a moment ( although the dxo one camera connects directly to the lightning port so, but it has it's own ios app)...the blackmagic intensity shuttle has component in....and the z1 has a component out , both at 1080i. And the shuttle has thunderbolt out....and it says "Requires Thunderbolt-equipped computer/storage device " , which sounds like an iphone too. As well, it says that the thunderbolt is bi-directional. And it talks about recapturing hdv to full 1920 not 1440. Maybe this is the ticket. but it might work better with their video assist, but then how is it powered? But now it's up in price from my original idea...to what the firewire recorders cost, although using things that could be far more useful all around, like the shuttle and the video assist. I see a number of different possible scenarios .I'll ask some questions on their forum. thanks

...nope....the shuttle must be connected to comp
...and last night late I found a video of other people working this problem. The used a component to hdmi converter, then successfully recorded to atomos. The problem is there's no portable solution I can find for this converter. There's one that's powered by usb and possibly it could be powered by a powerbank.
