CamMate Crane and a DVX100

I worked on a television shoot this past week and the 1st Unit used a CamMate crane and a dvx100 for the motion shots. It was the first time I got to see one in use up close. I was trying to figure out if it would be worth it to go with an inexpensive tripod crane system to get similar types of shots but I can't figure out how you would keep the camera fixed on one paticular shot while moving the crane.
The CamMate system used a motorized pan/tilt controller to keep it locked on the host as it floated around. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Answered my own question.

Glidecam makes a really nice tripod crane system, and I attached a Bescor motorized pan/tilt unit and got some pretty impressive results for less than $700.
