Cameras For Cheap?

Hey all, I am in the process of writing the scripts for a number of TimeFest entries, but am also considering entering a film of my own. The problem is, the equiptment I have is outdated and I feel that if I don't want to look like a fool, I need a new camera at least. :undecided (I know we could use the three cameras we have now, but we want HD Quality)

The problem is, our budget is VERY low. We were considering buying a Cannon HV20 for somewhere around $700-$800, which we can afford, but even that is a lot of money to spend right now :embarasse because we're not making a lot of cash at this time.

I had read someone post something about using a camera donated to them by another user when they got a new one, does this happen? Do people ever just want to give their cameras away when they get a new one? If not, is their any secret to finding a GOOD camera for CHEAP? Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

The only secret I know of is a credit card... I know Barry donated his hv20 to PK and Isara but thats a different kind of deal. Is there anyone in the area that might be willing to trade a script for camera use? What part of CA is Coarsegold? Surely someone not too far away you could trade some services with.

Coarsegold is a beautiful mountainous community near central California. About a half hour from Fresno and the same from Yosemite National Park. Thanks for your advice thus far!

I'd look for a DP on craigslist or mandy as well. Just be sure to meet with them personally before you start working with them, I wouldn't want to trust someone I've never met to show up on a shooting date.
