Camera upgrade recommendations?

So maybe you are swinging my way that a small camera with good EVF (and some body stabilisation) is fast becoming the sweet spot!
Yes, I guess that would be fair to say. Things seem to be moving towards the center as mirrorless cameras get better and ENG/cinema cameras get worse.
Only a fool doesn't adapt as necessary.

My GAS is re-ignited now :D One thing that really made me stop and think with the C70 (and C80) is no EVF. In my desperation to justify buying one I looked at how easily I could mount my Gratical Eye to it and then realised I'd be hanging a load of stuff off the body and defeating the object of having a lightweight alternative to my old C100ii. Wondering how everyone who works with a C70 gets on with just using the screen?

The C200 would probably be the easiest upgrade from the C100. I never loved that camera, but I shot everything in raw lite and I found the footage too noisy above ISO 200. The H264/AVCHD workflow is much simpler.

Too bad that the C70 falls out of your price range because to me, that is the true spiritual successor to the C100. From my first shoot with it, I knew that it was going to be a five-year camera for me. It might actually end up being 7 or 8.

Yeah that lack of EVF is a big issue for me. I kind of hate that big chunky DSLR style design canon went with for the C70/80. Wish they had given us a C100mkIII instead. Which I guess the C200 kind of is, it's just bigger.

I honestly think I would barely shoot raw on the C200 if I had it. Just the sheer amount of file space it would take would turn me off. Only if I were doing another indie film would I break that out.

Its also the nature of the market.. if your work is rolling for hours, maybe live, maybe at a sports even or political rally.. then 'proper' cameras are still the thing.

For making 1min for tiktok or a 30s stock shot.. one does not need half of the stuff the big cmeras offer :)

I think you hit the nail on the head. Yes, my shift in attitude may be somewhat dictated by my shift in work. I hardly ever work for clients anymore in a situation where everything has to go perfectly or else you look like a jackass.

I remember you mentioning this years ago! I still find it interesting re noise, I'm regularly sending ISO 1600/2000 clips out the door with no noise reduction.

I remember only having issues with the C200 regarding noise with details that were sitting down in the 0-15 ire range.

It's definitely a camera that likes having a higher-key captured image, and then you just plan to pull it down in post when you're going for something moodier.

But I almost always shot it around 800 and as long as the waveform was nice and fat and filled out I never used noise reduction either.

@DustinSchmidt Off topic, but I just sprang for a used R5C. With the number of clients also asking for photos, I realized that I can no longer put off buying a proper hybrid camera. Your video review was a key part of that decision.

That's so great! Thanks very much for watching. I'm really glad any of that content I've put out is helpful.

I will continue to stand by my love for the R5C. It's a great camera that's super versatile.
