Camera Tracking and Achieving This Look

Hello all.

Im new to AE, and I'm wanting to learn. I've seen a piece that I want to try and replicate for progression. Are there any tutorials out there that focus on camera tracking/lines etc?

Before you get anywhere, I would advise that you learn how to track first. There are various ways to track a specific shot at any given time and IMO the best thing you can do is try and get familiar with several types of trackers. Trust me, it's always a good idea to save yourself the headache of trying to determine what the easiest and most effective way to track is. The thing about match moving software is that it can get pretty overwhelming fairly quickly (especially when you first start learning).

Here are some of the easier packages to learn and they might be all you need to learn more or less.

1.) Mocha for AE - is the a planar tracker that tracks a general area rather than actual points. Very usual when you want to track a plane or flat surface but still a good track in other cases. One
plus side to Mocha is that can also rotoscope shots quickly and efficiently.

2.) Camera Tracker by The Foundry - is a 3D tracker that calculates every frame to create a environmental representation of your scene. This type of tracker will provide it's own points which you can then assign Nulls to for example.

3.) The default tracker in AE - is the simplest form of tracking a shot and a lot of times it may be all you need. I would try and use this any and every time you can get away with it.

(These of course are overly simplified definitions. Google and do your research.)

As far as tutorials go, there are plenty of videos but they are usually over 15 mins long and as I said, they can get very confusing if you haven't yet grasped the concepts and terminology of tracking and match moving. Here are two tutorials on Camera Tracker by The Foundry that are relatively short and enough to get you started. They will also not put you to sleep IMO.

The reason I recommend these particular tuts is due to the fact that learning Mocha and the default tracker shouldnt be too hard to get the hang of once you learn the basics. Camera Tracker is probably harder to learn compared to the other two alternatives. Good luck with your learning.
