Camera rig

The Maverick

Anyone seen the movie "Hotel" by Mike Figgis of "Timecode" fame. There is a making of documentary on the DVD and I saw this special "steering wheel" style rigs that he designed for the cameras. I was wondering if anyone know how to do build that, or where to find it. It's exactly what I'm looking for a production we're going to be shooting in West Africa. Any info will be appreciated.

Its called a Fig Rig. Manfrotto is selling them.

If you know anyone that can bend and shape metal it seems like they would be fairly simple to make the frame, then its a matter of getting mounts for your radio mic, zoom controller, etc.

My coworkers want to build one but they're slacking off. If they ever do it i'll post it.

has anyone really used one of these?

i mean there was some feedback from people who played with it in the booth at some show when it first came out but i've never heard anything since then and i'd love to hear some real feedback on its usability...

i currently use a mini rover for a handheld stabilizer but it leaves a lot to be desired.

the chrosziel twistor? looks interesting but as usual with chrosziel the price is nuts.

I built one using 3/4" PVC pipe and assorted PVC 45 degree elbows and PVC "T's". It cost about $5.00 total, worked fine, and was sufficient to give me an idea if I would spend for the real thing. I didn't. It does have it's place for some shots but is not suited for extremely long hand held work such as event coverage.

Maverick if you want a good handheld stabilizer get a Glidecam 4000Pro. Its inexpensive, has a real gimbal and Glidecam recently came out with a vest and arm that attaches to the stabilizer. The vest and arm is a bit expensive but the unit itself is awesome for its price. I've used it on music video shoots and where a stabilizing shot is required. As with all stabilizers, it takes a little while to learn to balance it. But once you get the hang of it, its a breeze.

I can still sense steps and other shakes in this fig rig... i am sure glidecam is superior.
Besides, this guy did Cold Creek Manor he is not getting my money! hah

Look for a thread started by me, I'm at work so I can't look for it right now. Also, try searching for "Felis Rig". I just use two accessory shoe adapters, swap one side to be left/right handed and there you go. All for $40 and is MUCH lighter than the Fig Rig. I'll try to remember to come back to this thread and post a pic or two when I get time. EDIT-*Or duh, just look at my avatar, silly me:laugh: *

I also suggest the Glidecam series if nothing else. Good build, solid performance, nice price.
