Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

this may get moved so if i'm posting this in the wrong place sorry.

In volume 2 when the heroine meets her teacher it seems they are using a digital camera of some sort. It looks like an xl1 with how grainy it is.

My question is can the dvx get that kind of look? Looks like a 15 fps dreamy shot. They did it in hidalgo too when they were in the desert.

Re: Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

I'm pretty sure you could add that grain in post to any kind of medium.

as far as i know the whole movie was shot in super 35.

Re: Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

Kill Bill was shot with Panavision cameras all on film, in a super-35, 3-perf configuration.  Robert Richardson timed with a Digitial intermediate, but there was no digital image capture.

I can't seem to find the information on what particular film stock was used for the training footage, but this is from the American Cinematographer article from last October, talking about the training scenes with the monk:

Richardson did design a specifically "textural" look for a sequence in which a wizened monk helps The Bride sharpen her fighting skills.  "Quentin wanted to replicate the visual generation loss in these old kung fu films- the scratches, the higher-than-normal contrast," he explains.  Instead of attempting to create the effect digitally, Richardson employed a photochemical process.  He began by capturing the action on contrasty Kodachrome color-reversal stock.  He processed it normally, struck an internegative from the print and then struck an interpositve from that print, and so on.  "We just kept making dupes and prints back and forth until Quentin was happy with the look," he says.

yay film!

Must be nice to be Quentin:

"Naaaw. Send it back! It looks like crap!"

Re: Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

I heard the same thing. Q.T. was going for the look he grew up with! 8)

Re: Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

I am a bit weary of directors doing tribute films as they often dont' turn out well. Just seems to be this is what happens. However, I was fairly pleased with Kill Bill 2. Although I thought the visual look of BW grainy didn't add anything to the story. I found it more distracting than helping it.

Re: Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

agreed, but that whole 'tribute' style, aka 'ripping off the guys who did it first' is kind of Quentin's thing, isn't it? I don't think you can really apply that to his movies because there are so many filmmaking cliches in his mish-mash style. Everything he does, we've seen it before, just maybe not in the same context.

but that's getting off topic. We'd all love that amount of control and the money to do it though.

Re: Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

he brings good old school movies who never found an audience to mainstream viewing.

Off the kill bill buzz they are releasing hero under his name
::)

Re: Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

yeah, lets just hope that Hero isn't hacked to death like miramax did to Shaolin Soccer. Anyway, I really enjoyed the look in the Pai Mei sequences. I was actually smiling during those segments, The quick zooms that are out of focus for a few seconds, the grain, and the contrast are all things I remember from the kung fu movies I grew up watching. From a kung fu flick fan standpoint those scenes could not have been done any better.

Re: Camera Question (kill bill vol 2)

I could be wrong, but it's my understanding that QT is putting his name on "Hero" to stop Miramax from hacking the film apart. I think I read that somewhere, but I can't remember where at the moment.
