Camera projection

I'm pretty new to After Effects and was wondering how to do camera projection. I saw the video copilot tutorial in which you project onto grids, but I was also saw a video where a guy took an image of an aircraft carrier and made a wire frame and projected onto it. Unfortunately he didn't give any details on how it was done. is there a way to create an editable in AE like you can in 3d programs?

To do projections on 3d geometry you have to build the geometry in a 3d program or you can build it in AE using planes. If it's complex it's usually 3d, but simple shapes can be done in AE.

follow the Andrew Kramer method. there is a new tutorial on that. its probably the one you're refering too. The tutorial in not even a month old. Same concept just cast/project your video on your own 3d build of choice.

you just make a solid, turn it into a 3d layer and then rotate it . it is flat planes and not real 3d geometry. you can make a 6 sided box for a room , hallway, or street/alley etc.
then using a light you project the image/footage onto the 3d layers

there are several tuts on that here:

http://videocopilot.net/tutorials.html

those are just flat planes rotated in 3d space, its done the same way in the same software as andrew kramer's tutorial. Andrews tuts are just a box you look into, whereas the ship example is the corner of a box you look at rather than into.

Oh, O.K. thanks. I guess I was a little confused and thought it was he had used lines to accomplish it. By the way, I'm new to AE, and this is probably a stupid question, but, how do you create a flat plane, is it the same as the grids?

right click and choose new solid and pick white so it takes the projected texture at full brightness, one you make it 3d you can move it in 3d space.

the grids you see in the AE part are a white solid with the grid plugin applied to it

in the photoshop part of the tuts, the grids you see is the vanishing point tool
