Camera Package/owner operator debate

Hey all,

I have not posted in a while so hello to everyone. So here is the deal, as of recently I have been getting a fair amount of work as a cinematographer on the commercial end of things. I am looking to expand my business and considering the possibility of purchasing a more high end camera package and selling my 7d camera and gear because that market is way over saturated. Ideally it will be used for the spots I shoot, and possibly more features down the road. I have ruled out the option of RED as I don't feel like going into debt on a camera that it seems like everyone low balls rentals rates on. Which leaves me considering the AF100, Sony F3, and Sony NEX fs100. I want something more professional that my clients will actually want to shoot with, so the F3 is the top of my list but I wanted the forums opinions on all 3 cameras because it will help me make up my mind.

I would also like to state going with an F3 package would most likely force me to take out a small lone on so I guess one of the big deciding factors would be knowing if anyone on the forum has has been getting solid work with their F3 package.

Thanks,

Graham Robbins

Do you have enough work and regular clinets to pay for the camera? If so, go the F3 route, it's a amazing piece of gear.
If you will have to get a loan to buy something, but you're uncertain if you'll pay it off, don't do it, buddy.
Smart business decisions are not based on assumptions.
Get a camera you can afford, to minimize your losses, in case you don't get enough gigs to make a profit in the gear.

How is F3 or Af100 market different than over saturated RED or 7D market? Camera is a camera, at least with RED you can claim that you will be using the same camera Peter Jackson is using. That said 7D and RED/F3/AF100 are two different markets. How much can you charge for 7D package rental - $200-300? While with RED/F3 you are getting $1k+ for package = very different economics.
