Camera or deck for importing into computer?

Can you use any camcorder as a deck to load your footage into your editing system, or do lesser playheads give lesser quality? Or is that not so in the world of 1's and 0's? Or is it better to go with a real deck and what do they cost? I've heard mention of a Sony DSR-11.

I use a $300.00 Panasonic PV-GS19 to capture and it works great. I'd much rather wear its heads out than my DVX100A. No difference in quality.

You lucky people in the US. There are no 'cheap' dv decks in the UK and there's an awful lot of models made for ntsc markets while neglecting the pal market completely.

Gallus: Why must you have a deck? Use a cheap DV-camera
Robob: No its not the same size

What if I'm shooting with HDV on tapes? Does the MPEG compression on the tape when recording MPEG change timecode? Do I need a HDV camera to capture or can I use a SD camera?

You need HDV for HDV, and it has to match the manufacturer for all intents and purposes.
In DV, 1394 Digital is digital, doesn't matter where it comes from, but some low end cameras don't feed timecode, or aren't capacble of batch-digi.
