Camera mounted LCD panel.

Hey There,
I'm new to the board and after reading the amount of info that is shared on this board, I thought this would be a great place to post a few questions.

I have read alot about field monitors and the flip out LCD on the camera. I know there has been much discussion about the representation of the picture that the LCD shows. My question is, are those camera mounted LCD monitors any better than the on board LCD? If it is a better representaion, what is the better brand? I'm a very WYSIWYG kind of guy so I would love something that I can just plug in and go!

Thanks for any information.

Chris

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

I have the same question...I've been researching them for a few weeks but have never seen the quality. I read a lot about the 5.6"varizoom and there is a 7"panasonic that will go 16:9 or 4:3. the panasonic is 525 without accessories and the varizoom is around 350 with case, hood and mount. I've search to no avail.

Anyone?

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

Glidecam makes a fantastic 16X9 / 4:3 lcd, you might want to check those out. The panasonic 7" is the best bet though, I have tried a handfull of those cheap $200 7" and they are all crap.

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

I just got the 7" Panny LCD a couple weeks ago and I like it alot for framing and stuff.  It's not as sharp or clear as the flip out LCD but I think its good to see stuff 16x9.

Jarred you find the same thing in comparison?

This probably isnt the greatest example or anything but heres a photo I took of it in front of my sony wega tv when I was revewing some footage:

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

I had the Panasonic 7" LCD for a year or so, then went to hook it up via a 12v battery and cigarette plug (instead of my traditional Anton Bauer 2-pin plug from my DVC200) and boom.  Dead LCD.  I am P/O'd.  That's a lot of money to just flush.  Darn it.

Anyway, it was good for framing and decent coloring.  However, it was very low rez in my opinion even if it is the best of the bunch.

Sorry to hear about your problems AndrewD. I am using the cigarette adapter to bescor battery clip on pack myself and havent had any issues. Was that the first time you tried that setup?

Yes, it was.. And my last unfortunately. I guess I am going to break down and get a real field monitor. I have been eyeing the new Sony 9L3...

I wonder if the LCD could be fixed reasonably? Haven't called Panasonic yet..

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

Don't forget that if you have one of those portable DVD players with the right jacks on it, you can run your camera into the DVD player and use the screen as a monitor on shoots. I can switch my screen from 4:3 to 16:9

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

DVX100SHOOTER................Which one did you buy? And what connectors did you buy to use with your DVX? Would you recommend a newer model? Thanks, Marty

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

What about using a laptop for a monitor, (with the right connectors of course)? Anyone hear of doing that, or had any exp. with that setup?

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

Mine is by a company called INITIAL. I know I said the same thing! LOL! I was like I never heard of this company! I bought it at Circuit City and it works like a champ so I am cool with it. It has all sorts of jacks on it including S-Video and RCA's. The DVD Player comes with the cables too. I think Walmart sells the Initial DVD players now too. Anyway you run your cables out of your camera and into your DVD player.

I believe there is a delay when using this setup (ie, a lag between the camera and the display on the laptop). Or so I have read.

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

HeyHey, first time post here. I just got my dvx100a over the weekend (traded out the xl1s for it). I have been watching this site for some time (good work btw!).
On this topic I have about 30 15'' LCD panels that are used in laptops, all brand new. The only problem is I dont have any controller cards for them. I have done some research and havent decided if this is even worth the try, but anyway. Anyone think this setup would be worth while (LCD's are UXGA)? If someone has done this or would like to try let me know as I would be interested in seeing how it would look.

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

Have you guys figured out how to mount a portable DVD player on the same tripod as the camera/crane? ???

I use the Panasonic 7". It's the first LCD monitor short of the TransVideo that I fell comfortable using to focus with. I've used it for years with the large cameras, and more recently with the DVX-100. It's very handy when using the anamorphic adapter, since putting the monitor in the 16:9 mode gives me a true picture and helps focus.

Recently I had it modified to accept the DVX-100 batteries for powering it... really handy now, since we just bring a bunch of D54 batteries to run both the camera and monitor.

FWIW, we've had to ban those from our shooting environments. Many of them generate significant RF and have actually affected wireless devices (mics, video, etc.)

What?
Mitch Ives, How did you modify it ? ???
I thought Panasonic 7" LCD Monitors only take those expensive Anton Bauer Pro Former batteries($150 battery + $500 charger ! )
Can you tell us exactly how you did it?
Is it safe?
You have any pictures?

Thank you,
:)

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

Ooohh, ooohh. I was just able to take a look at the Yamakawa T7070 7" TFT and it is really kewl. I'm not sure about if Yamakawa is very common in the US, here in Europe/Germany they are very big in DVD-players and stuff (most google references of this TFT come from Europe).

It sells for 199 Euros at Amazon.de and has a resolution of 800x480 pixels (better than the Panny)... and it looked very bright and nice and cuddly. Had no chance to check with my beloved DVX, though. But it was tough for me not to grab and hug it. :-*

This thingie could be IT!

Re: Camera mounted LCD panel.

Still the question remains. How do you use 7.5V to power a 12V monitor without a heavy weighted voltage regulator? What's used: a transformer, a voltage regulator, or a step-up amp regulator?
